EDUCATION
One of the Ulises’ greatest desires is to break the history of oppression that has forced the Afro-Ecuadorians to be marginalized and live in poverty. Ulises sees education as the best way to achieve this goal in a permanent and sustainable manner.

For generations the education in Piquiucho has been poor. The twelve hundred inhabitants of the region had only one primary school. This school did not even provide a complete primary education and had only eighty students taught by four teachers. Ulises began his work in this area by donating uniforms and school supplies to children and subsequently improved the infrastructure of the school dramatically. This school now has more and better classrooms with ample sports facilities. In addition, efforts have been made by the Ministry of Education in Ecuador to get more teachers to this school.

Thanks to the successful work of Ulises, now the school "San Gabriel" in Piquiucho has more than two hundred and fifty students, has ten specialist teachers and provides a full primary education. Furthermore, Ulises has made sure that children attend school with uniforms, school supplies, school breakfast and lunch, all being free. At the moment, the "San Gabriel" primary school is part of the United Nations Millennium Schools and is proudly among Ecuador’s top forty primary schools.

The task of Ulises in the area of education did not stop there. His plans include the creation of a secondary school and a university. This university must offer careers that enhance the employment opportunities for the inhabitants of Piquiucho in particular and the area in general. These careers are not restricted only to sports education, but should include liberal careers such as medicine, law, agriculture and business administration.
